Numberplates and write-off vehicles
If you are unfortunate enough to have
an accident and your vehicle is declared a "write off" - i.e it would
cost more to repair the car than it is worth- then you need to act
quickly to ensure you retain the rights to your numberplate.
Firstly you need to apply
to either put the number on to
retention or transfer it to another
vehicle - this MUST be completed prior to the insurance company paying
out and "taking ownership" of your car.

You need to be absolutely clear with
your insurer from the outset that you wish to keep the registration
number otherwise it will simply remain on the vehicle and be disposed of
as the insurance company sees fit.
The key point here is that once you no
longer own the vehicle- you no longer own the registration number on the
vehicle- so before you lose ownership- you MUST conclude a transfer.
Sadly the
DVLA take a hard line and if
you do lose your plate along with the vehicle after an accident- it's
almost certain you will not be able to reclaim it.
So remember- if you have an accident
and your car may be written off- act fast to be sure you keep your
numberplate too!
