Number plate transfer | how to transfer a private number plate

Transferring private number plates isn't as difficult as some personal number plate dealers would have you believe- your first consideration is the status of the private number plate - it will either be on retention or on a vehicle.

If the personal number plate is on retention

To transfer the cherished number plate to your car you will need to complete section 4 of the retention document. generally when cherished number plates are on retention- the assignment fee has been paid so you need only sign the document and send it to your DVLA local office. (full instructions are provided on the document)

If the registration number plate is currently on a vehicle

You need to complete form V317 from the DVLA with the details of both vehicles.
The following documents will need to be sent to your local DVLA office.

* Registration document V5C for donor vehicle.
* Registration document V5C for the recipient vehicle.
* Valid MOT certificate for both vehicles.
* Photocopy of both tax discs.
* £80 cheque payable to DVLA Swansea
