Numberplates and vehicle theft
If you are unfortunate enough to have
an your car stolen then you must firstly notify the police and deal with
the criminal matter which is of utmost importance.
Once you have notified the police you
need to speak with your insurer about the theft and also your
numberplate- ultimately you will need a letter from them stating that
they agree to you "reassigning" the number should your vehicle not be
recovered.
Unfortunately it is a long process to
"recover" your numberplate- should the vehicle be stolen and not
recovered then after 12 months you can apply to the DVLA to "reassign"
the numberplate- you will need a letter of authority from your insurer-
this is because if they have paid out on the theft then technically they
"own" the registration number.
To abide by the rules at the point of
theft your vehicle should have had a valid MOT and tax.
Ultimately you will need to speak to
the DVLA for their guidance- be clear with your insurer, the DVLA and
the police that you wish to recover your numberplate and follow their
advice- it will be a long winded process but you should be able to
recover your numberplate so long as you meet the criteria.
