Motorbike numberplates
Motorbike numberplates are typically square and of a limited and
prescribed size. See:
numberplate sizes
The DVLA permits motorbikes to only have a rear numberplate - a practise
that is in force today and has been for some time.
There is a great deal of bikers who have illegal numberplates that are
either too small or illegible and the police sporadically crack down on
motorbike numberplate offences but generally tolerate it as a nuisance.
Motorbikes and mopeds can participate in the
DVLA numberplate transfer
scheme so a numberplate you hold on a moped or numberplate you hold on a
motorbike can be transferred across to a car or onto retention so long
as you meet the criteria for the cherished transfer.

When numberplates were fist assigned to
motorbikes it was mandatory that they also displayed a front numberplate
but due to the absence of large mudguards on new bikes and in a rethink
on legislation it was decided that motorbike numberplates need only be
displayed to the rear.
